Compact, Powerful Ditch Witch FX20 Vacuum Excavator Released
6/4/2008

The Ditch Witch® organization, the industry leader in the design and manufacture of underground construction equipment, has released its most portable and affordable vacuum excavation system to date, the FX20.

The FX20 is ideal for municipal projects such as cleaning out valve boxes, commercial and residential debris cleanup and landscaping, exposing utility lines, posthole digging, and many other relatively small, short-run projects. Landscapers, municipal workers, utility companies, and do-it-yourselfers are expected to be among the skid-mounted FX20's biggest users, as it offers many of the capabilities of larger vacuum excavation systems, such as the Ditch Witch FX30 and FX60, but in a small package that can be transported in the back of a pickup truck, on a flatbed, or on a small trailer — with no CDL required.

Smaller in stature does not mean light-duty, however, at least not when it comes to the FX20, which is the heaviest and most ruggedly built vac system in its horsepower class. Smaller does not always mean less powerful, either: the FX20's 540 cfm (15.3 cmm) vacuum power is the same as the larger Ditch Witch FX30. System power is provided by a 27-hp (20.1 kW) Kohler gas engine, one of the most popular, reliable and low-maintenance engine brands in the industry.

The FX20 has a 150-gallon (568 L) spoils tank that is mounted permanently at a 45-degree angle to make the dumping cycle quick and easy. Ditch Witch engineers equipped the FX20 with many heavy-duty and low-maintenance components that would provide reliable performance for many years. For example, the FX20 has a simple, belt-driven blower that is reliable and easy to maintain. The FX20's triple-filtration system features a cyclone separator that cleans the air before it ever reaches the filter, further minimizing maintenance. And the FX20 has an exclusive, non-contact water shutoff valve that protects the water pump, improving reliability.

Like all Ditch Witch vacuum excavators, the FX20 has a curbside operator's console designed to make controls easily accessible. For custom or international applications, the console can be positioned on the left side of the unit.
