Offset locating and depth-reading ability enables the user to determine depth and horizontal offset alongside the beacon—even next to sidewalks and around trees, brush, and other obstacles.
The 8500 provides accurate depth readings even on inclines of up to 20 percent, so the operator can track up the sides of ditches and on other uneven terrain.
Exclusive "drill-thru" mode provides both current and predicted depth.

The 8500 has 60 roll positions on the clockface, 36 more than the nearest competitor; with 60 roll positions, the operator has access to more detailed information, resulting in a more accurate bore.
Exceptional resolution at higher pitches makes it easier to match entry and exit plans and keep the bore on track.
The 8500's ultra-low, 1.75-kHz frequency can "see through" signals given off by objects in the vicinity, such as rebar and overhead power lines, resulting in greater productivity.
The 8500 has seven channels to choose from, which minimizes the risk of interference and eliminates channel-hopping with other nearby drills and electronic devices.
Soft-touch hand grips provide greater operator comfort.

USB connection on its remote display and a secure digital (SD) card on the display; with these, the 8500 operator can plug a laptop directly into the display and copy data, or pull the SD card out of the display and take it to the office.
The 8500 protects its sensitive electronics with extra padding around the electronics and battery connections in the beacon, minimizing the shock and vibration that come with extreme drilling conditions.
Improved beacon battery life indicator calculates battery usage and displays calculated battery life on-screen.
Balanced weight makes it easy to use the 8500 over the course of a long day.
